Imagine that!

I have a blog!

Who’da thunk?!

In all seriousness though, life has exploded in a sticky and messy way over the last few months.

I started dyeing up a storm.

busy-bee1

My lurvely sock yarn is now being stocked in This Is Knit in Dublin, which is awesome. I still get a big goofy grin on my face when I see the yarn wall in there.

As well as having yarn hanging on every available surface in my house, we also moved at the start of July. I cannot stress how much I hate moving house. We essentially lived out of boxes for two weeks, then had some amazingly wonderful friends help us get everything from old house to new house in one weekend. Bear in mind that no moving van was involved. Just my (small-ish) car and the (compact) car of one of the movers.

It was exhausting, but felt really good.

moving-blues

Wow…there’s a sleep deprived face with a mop of bad hair on top.

It never ceases to amaze me how much damn “stuff” accumulates over a couple of years in a place. You can move in with a box and two cases, and leave with a van’s worth. We moved in with rather more than a box and two cases (unless we’re just counting stash here!), but not what we thought was an entirely unreasonable amount considering that we’d just been married and had received a shed load of gifts.

We moved out with a substantially larger book collection (we had moved from one case to 5, having gotten a load of stuff out of storage) multiple book cases and dvd racks, a big ass television, and a huge solid wood bed with a huge orthopedic mattress.

The chaos took a good week and a half to clear (and there are still a couple of archive boxes lurking around, if I’m honest), and was followed by a very happy wedding of two of our close friends. A fabulous day, and a pig on a spit which seemed to excite the boys like Lego at Christmas.

It took three weeks to get our internet sorted. *snort* Still not done with the sorting..I hate eircom even more than I hate moving house, but they are the best option for us at the moment. Can’t wait until our contract is up though, so we can get an ISP that doesn’t take 14 phone calls to get our name and address right, and who won’t sell us stuff that they don’t have.

Sorry…..the whole internet-getting thing has been stressful.

The couple of weeks without internets were strange at first (and by strange, I mean “like caffeine withdrawal”. Or possibly far too much caffeine). It was very odd being offline, but I was very productive in the knitting stakes - though less good at photographing everything.

dreamcatcher

A dreamcatcher for Leah, in Malabrigo lace. Ended up using a wire coathanger as the frame as the drink cup thing just wasn’t working out.

I also got the Gabriel’s wings that I’d been working on finished, which turned out really well, imho.

noro-wings1

It’s now off with a new owner who is very pleased with it.

I knitted up about eleventybillion washcloths, and two fab mobius scarves - one in handspun from DudleyKnitter and the other long enough to be worthy of Doctor Who . Reknitted my colourscape Urchin. Was on a roll so also reknitted my Star crossed beret. Finished off the blackberry clapotis that has been sitting in the knitting basket since Spring. Reknitted the peach tree socks for my mother, who asked that they be made a bit longer so that she could wear them with boots.

By the time the internet was reconnected, I was feeling rather contented in my book-and-yarn-filled cocoon. The manic pace didn’t take long to start again though, as myself and HusBeast were involved in a games convention here, and started running a huge gaming event for 150 international gamers the day after the con ended. Insanity, I tells ya!

Can't sleep, proxy will eat me...

Can't sleep, proxy will eat me...

Last week HusBeast’s sister got married, and we’re currently living in their house, babysitting their 3 and 5 year old as they swan around the Med on a cruise ship for 2 weeks. If sleep is for the weak, then just call me a sissy and pass the blankie.

Will you do the Fandango?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

A little bit of a geeky reference to a Queen song, just to get things kicked off.

The Ravelympics came and went, and though I didn’t finish my project, I did really well. Vivian was done up as far as the yoke, which considering just how many times I had to restart the cabled project of doom is pretty impressive.

What is less impressive is the fact that I’ve not picked her up again since. Real life has exploded over the last couple of weeks, and unfortunately it hasn’t all been in good ways by a long shot.

Bad times require mindless knitting, so a couple of balls of Sugar and Cream got turned from stash into FOs.

lime-washcloths

Much like handknitted socks, washcloths tend to suffer from a serious case of “why wouldn’t you just buy them”. As the owner of one very sensitive face, I’ve become addicted to the things. They take no time to work up, are fabulously soft yet still manage to exfoliate my skin so that I don’t end up with puberty-face.

mistletoe-cloths

These ones remind me less of Christmas and more of Italy. Perhaps it’s wishful thinking now that Spring is in the air.

In spectacular fashion, I stayed in all day yesterday, despite the fact that it was national drinking day Paddy’s day in Ireland. I was far too domesticated* Did a lot of handwashing (our washing machine is still out of order three weeks later. Bloody nightmare!) and finished a pair of socks that had been hanging around for far too long.

scaramouche

So not my colour, but they’re still fabulously comfy. I love Lorna’s laces sock yarn bigtime.

I also had a slight lightbulb moment yesterday. Not only did I darn a sock (my lovely tofutsies sock) that I’ve been ignoring for weeks and weeks, but in the great rummage for the end of the ball of yarn, I found a perfectly wound cake of Malabrigo silky merino. The cake that I convinced myself that I didn’t have back in February when I was working on my Clapotis, which resulted in wailing and the gnashing of teeth. Slightly embarassed (though very frugal-feeling, now that I don’t have to buy another skein) work has resumed on the Clap. Should be done over the weekend, and then it’s back to Vivian!

The down side to that particular see saw is that cash is tight for us right now, so I’m forcing myself to do a destash-for-cash. I have been feeling rather guilty about my huge box of sock yarn that’s just sitting in my room when we’re managing to just about scrape by on rent and bills. I’ve got some good stuff on the way out, including one of my precious, precious skeins of Wollmeise. If anyone’s interested, it’s up on my trade page on Ravelry.

I’ve also uploaded a whole load of new, shiny and fabulously squishy yarns on my etsy store, so check them out!

*Don’t worry, I still had a couple of drinks. Though that ended with a mad dive to rescue a laptop, a sticky mobile phone and a rather flustered HusBeast…

Froggy

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

The Ravelympics kicked off on Friday night, and I kicked off mine by frogging the living crap out of two hats. Took much longer than expected, as I’d done a stellar job at weaving in the ends, so couldn’t actually find the things again.

Still, all worked out nicely, and now I’ve got these hanging around as evidence…

frogged-eco

The eco beret

frogged-urchinand the Urchin.

More to follow on those at a much, much later date.

So on with the main event.

I started Vivian on Sunday, having spent all of Saturday in town with some fabulous knitters for the LSG 2nd birthday party. There was beer, cake, rugby, tea and zen knitting. A very enjoyable day, all in all. There are photos, but I’ve still to locate my damn Nokia usb cable. Anyway, I cast on on Sunday afternoon, and by the time dinner rolled around I had finished frogging it for the second time. Nothing to do with the pattern or the yarn, but more my total inability to read the bit on the cable chart that says to repeat the first 3 lines until line…..30-something. Which means that I was technically starting the waist shaping somewhere distinctly south of my navel.

At that stage of the evening, I just couldn’t bear to cast on a third time, so instead I pulled out the chart for the left sleeve and got to grips with that. I’m pleased to report that it went swimmingly.

vivian-left-sleeve

Left sleeve is on multiple stitch holders and residing in my knitting basket. Right sleeve has been cast on and is progressing well.

Now I realise that this leaves me behind schedule right at the start of things. Added to this is the fact that I’ve promised to write a game for a convention that’s happening this coming weekend, not in 3 weeks’ time like I thought. On Thursday I’m also heading to breakfast at my sister in law’s house so that we (plus HusBeast and the niece and nephew) can go to see The Princess and the Frog matinee. Vivian is really not cinema knitting. I’m hoping to get the right sleeve done by Thursday so that I can get the body up and running and get a couple of hours done on it on Friday…because I’ll have no knitting time at all on Saturday.

Phew.

This whole event is proving rather interesting already. I am looking forward to seeing just how much I can get done by the closing ceremony - it’ll be an experiment in anti-procrastination. I mean, if I really can get something like this done (or near to done) in 15 days, then there’s no excuse for not finishing all my wips in a suitably speedy timeframe either.

Or something like that.

Next jumper I make though? Garter stitch, totally.

Decisions, decisions

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

That lemon, ginger and honey hot drink is epic stuff. I’m feeling a million times better today and almost ready to take on the world.

At some point in my fevered state last night, I had a crazy idea. I can only attribute my decision to turn this into something official to the number of brain cells I’ve sneezed out over the last 48 hours.

I’m going to be competing in the Ravelympics, and Vivian is my project.

Yup, I’ll be casting on at 2am on Sunday for a hair raising 17 days of knitting a hooded, cabled, seed stitchy cardigan.

…..I have no earthly idea if I’ll get the thing finished, but my hope is to get a good chunk of it done anyway. I also have utter faith in Ysolda’s patterns as they tend to be far easier than the end product would suggest. Just in case though, I’ll also be frogging the non-slouchy eco beret and also that colourscape Urchin that I made at some point last year. I put in an extra two wedges for extra flooom value, and it failed miserably. Now the damn thing mocks me on a regular basis, so I’m going to frog it to death, reskein the yarn and then put it aside for reknitting into a new urchin. The two hat-froggings will count as two projects, so if I get frustrated with the cardigan I can take it out on them and still be getting something done!

Today, in earnest, the great yarn-off started in my house.

I began the day by uploading more yummy yarns onto my etsy store (buy my yarn! Help me overcome the urge to hoard it all like some sort of gollum!)

I also started the task of destashing. Now I know I keep saying that I’m destashing and I do try. Before moving from Belfast I gave a bin liner of the stuff away. Things were down to vaguely manageable levels. I’ve been in this house for nearly two years though, and don’t tell me you don’t know how evil “yarn creep” is. It’s a strange phenomonon, where otherwise sane knitters are certain that they’ve only purchased a few skeins here and there and they are, at the same time, knitting through projects and getting stuff done. Somehow though, there seems to be an ever increasing amount of unknitted yarn in the house.

For example, I like sock yarn. A lot. Possibly more than is reasonable or sensible. I even joined a couple of sock clubs last year. Today, however, I managed to open a drawer and find not one, not two but SIX skeins of sock yarn that I’d entirely forgotten I owned. How the hell does someone do that? Granted they were 50g skeins (excuse one) and more than one skein is needed for a pair of socks (excuse the second) but wtf? Even me, with my scary knows-what’s-in-all-the-cupboards-photographic-memory had to have a cup of tea having made the discovery.

With that in mind, I’ve started poking through my stash. If I have enough yarn to make me feel like Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom, then I also need to realise that I’m sitting on a lot of gold…er…cash. I can’t afford to have literally miles of yarn that I’m not going to get around to knit before I hit my next milestone birthday. So today has been filled with taking photos. Naturally, the sun didn’t oblige by staying in the same cloud-free spot for more than fifteen seconds, but that’s the way of things.

My trade page on Ravelry has the first offerings on it. Prices are listed in dollars, but that’s just ‘cos most of the traffic on there is from the States.

There’s some Rowan cotton, some megaboots, some copihue….rather a large amount of this indigo dyed cotton and the humourous story that goes with it…

cotton-cone

…and there will be more up over the next few days, including  Sublime and some vintage stuff that I’ve picked up. I’m even contemplating parting with a skein of my precious crack Wollmeise. It’s even one of the limited edition, sock club only skeins.

Sometimes I even scare myself a little.

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Have managed to get myself well and truly lurgified. HusBeast has been unwell over the last couple of days and spiked a huge fever on Sunday night. I thought rather smugly, that I’d escaped. Woke up this morning feeling like I’d been punched repeatedly between the eyes as I slept. Still managed to crawl out of bed and over to the station in time to catch the train, but left town early and am now ensconced on the sofa, complete with hot drink and blanket, and several projects are surrounding me and begging for attention.

The accidently teeny hat is still sitting on the same bread plate that it was last week. It’s really pretty, but unless I’m planning on shrinking to the size of a five year old, it’s gonna need frogging.

accidently-teeny-hat

The yarn and pattern are both great though, and work really well together. I just had a slight fail on the needles is all.

The main reason that it hasn’t been blocked is because of this beautiful creature, which is currently nestled asserting dominance over my knitting basket.

blackberry-clap

It’s the infamous Clapotis, in Mmmmmmalabrigo silky merino, which is amazingly like the yarn I used for my first clap in all aspects bar the price. Even with the silly shipping rates, this stuff is still pretty damn affordable. (BTW, if you Dubs haven’t been into This Is Knit to fondle their Malabrigo yet, I suggest you do it quickly!) These skeins were a prezzie from the lovely Lesley (who came to visit…more below!) and unfortunately I’ve run out just as I get into the last section. Seems that getting this done on 3 skeins was just a tad on the over ambitious side.  Being the epic person that she is, Lesley messaged me as soon as she got home to say she’d secured another skein in the yarn shop that she works in (Fibre Space in D.C.)

Seeing as there was a visiting knitter in the house, Friday was mostly spent trawling through the many yarn shops in Dublin, which go from the awesome to the “3 skeins of baby acrylic on a shelf” variety.

I’ve been resisting buying yarn for months now, partly because I’ve got a lot and partly because I can’t justify buying even more yarn when I’ve got *coughovercoughthirtymilescough* of the stuff already. I got a gift voucher for my birthday in October and picked up some lambs pride to make a Sylvi out of. On Wednesday I technically broke my no-yarn-since-October kick when I had to pick up two more skeins of the same stuff that I’d ordered in October. Friday saw me fall off the wagon rather dramatically, as I found myself returning home with this

rowan-splurge

It’s Rowan pure wool aran in a fab charcoal colour. I’d been lusting after it for a while to make myself a Vivian and when I saw it on sale, I crumpled like a cheap suit. In an amazing turn of events, I even started a swatch at SnB this morning. I may die of seed stitch, but it should look awe-fricking-some.

The sock of the moment is still on the go, and even went to Kilkenny castle with us at the weekend.

well-travelled-sock

It’s not a colourway that I’d have chosen for myself as I’m the least pink person out there, but it came as part of the Lorna’s Laces sock club. I love their sock yarn, and I love knitted socks, so who am I to deny myself? They may be resigned to being boot socks though.

Being at a tourist spot, with a tourist, it was time for a cheesy photo op as well

say-cheese

Classy birds, us!

I’ve got yet another project on the go now as well. Gabriel’s wings is the pattern, and it’s using a fabulously coloured skein of Noro sock yarn that I got for my 29th but didn’t want to turn into socks. The two are working rather well together.

gabriels-wings

It’s early days yet, but I’m liking it so far. Should be pretty cool when it’s all blocked and stuff.

In other news, I’ve done an etsy store update - or the start of one at least. Sock is up, lace and DK will be going up tonight, unless I’m forced back to bed by my irate tonsils. As usual, all colourways are repeatable in all bases, so if you see something you might like feel free to drop me a line.

This is one of Lesley’s knits that she brought with her..it’s Ysolda’s Ishbel, and it’s knitted in my organic merino DK.

lesleys-ishbel-1

lesleys-ishbel-2

It’s always really nice to see my yarn knitted up into much-loved garments. It’s just the confidence booster a girl needs on a dull and sneezy Wednesday afternoon.

Time for more of that ginger, lemon and honey concoction, methinks.

The Itchy and Scratchy Show!

Friday, January 29th, 2010

One of the groups on Ravelry that I’m both a member of and actually take part in is LSG. We’re a bunch of foul-mouthed, opinionated wenches at the best of times, so when the call went out for a VD day swap, how could I possibly refuse?

My parcel arrived in the post this week, from a lovely tweasel in the UK

vd-swap

A suitably LSG card, some fantastic handmade soap, and a dice bag with “Bite Me” stitched on it. The other cool bit about the bag, which I haven’t snapped, is that it’s lined….and the fabric has booze bottles all over it :)

Totally awesome!

This morning, I rose at the horrific time of 5.30am, so that I could take a trip to the airport and pick up the fabulous MorningSprite, who’s visiting from Virginia/D.C. for a bit. While we chatted on the way home, we mostly vanished to our respective rooms for naptime. Her brain was telling her that it was 3am; mine that I’d only had 2 hours sleep.

She did manage to give me an envelope of awesome before heading to sleep though. Inside was

goodies

A hand bound notebook of handmade paper and a copy of Made in Brooklyn, which I’ve been trying to get my grubby little mitts on since it came out. The best part?

signed

Tee hee hee.

Jared Flood is fab. So fab that he even spelled my odd Irish name correctly in the dedication.

Tee hee hee.

So now that I’m awake again, have had tea and biccies, and am firmly ensconced on the sofa, I’m feeling much more human. I don’t have the ability to take decent photos of purples though, which are a challenge even on a good day, so there’s no picture of the Clapotis-in-progress. Next time.

Next time will also have photos of either a lovely and perfectly serviceable slouchy beret, or one of me crying as I frog it. It was a lovely pattern. IS a lovely pattern. Simple, but looks really faaaancy when it’s done. Except mine, which is currently blocking over a breadplate. I fear that it may be less slouchy and more beanie on me. Somehow I managed to use the right size needles and yarn, and end up with a mini-beret.

Let’s see how much blocking can actually do. I am both optimistic and fearful.

Baby, it’s cold outside

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

The snow, which had been dusting the countryside since Christmas, arrived on New Year’s Eve by the bucketload. Blizzard proportions and such a novelty that most of the guests at our party took the opportunity to dance about outside amidst the white flakes.

A week later, the gloss had worn off. The temperature hit -13C on more than one occasion. The snowdrifts were topped up daily by fresh snowfall and in some parts of the country people were left without heating as the oil in their tanks froze solid.

snow1

Newspapers report it as being the worst winter in eleventybillion years. Last time I remember there being snow of this level (as backed up by the local papers) was in 1982. In honesty, I don’t remember it very well, but my dad tells me about it from time to time, and I’m glad it’s fuzzy.

Not being able to leave the house is something that drove me insane. The roads were too dangerous to walk on, particularly in sheltered little cul-de-sac places like ours that had 4 inches of the white stuff on a good day. I nearly killed myself dealing with the wheelie bin on the Monday after new year’s, and my window herb garden gave up the ghost -  that was really the straw that broke the camel’s back.

plants

I did the only sensible thing for a knitter to do.

I went stash-diving.

Since January 4th, I have….

Squee’d some more over my secret satan parcel (not shown is the fabulous High Seas shawl pattern by Kieran Foley which the lovely Lucy dropped into my Ravelry inbox!)

secret-satan

…and I’ve done a lot of knitting, starting with these puppies.

south-shore-socks

Knee socks in Lorna’s Laces shepherd sock (South shore is the colourway).

foliage-top

A Foliage hat from Knitty in Malabrigo Chunky (Indigo). This yarn is like crack, it really is. It’s also the first hat in living memory that I can wear for hours and hours and not have the overly sensitive skin on my face get angry with me. I always giggled to myself when the line “Malabrigo cures excema” was uttered on the Lime and Violet podcast, but they weren’t wrong!

After this, I cracked out my brand new 8mm Lang needles (see previous bit about having an awesome secret satan swap partner!). Which are really Addis, but aren’t sold as addis. There was a problem with the UK/Irl distributor of Addis, you see, so they could not be had for love nor money in this country since…some time during the summer. Now these Lang needles are available, and are not Addis. Even though they’re made by Addi, have the same pointy tips and fabulously smooth connectors that have made me an Addi obsessive convert. Long story short - buy Lang needles, cos they’re awesome, and come in bamboo as well as metal.

…but i digress…

My new needles were introduced to some Twilley’s Freedom yarn, which has been sitting in my stash for two years at this stage. I had done some stash swappage when I was living in Belfast, intending to make a booga bag. Unfortunately my washing machine has a knackered heating element, so only washes on cold. Very good for the environment, less so for felting.

The Cherry Garcia pattern has been in my queue for months and months, so I set myself up in bed with my yarny bits, a beer (or two) and season 4 of Supernatural on my laptop. Episodes, beer and knitting went very well. Next morning, I realised that I’d made a bit of a mistake and done all of my cables to the front, instead of doing every other to the back. Ah well. At least it’s all matchy! No big deal anyway, as I’m totally gonna make another of these babies in the future.

boozeberry

I finished that off yesterday afternoon at SnB, which is a miracle all of itself, as I usually get more chatting, drinking of coffee and looking at everything else that’s going on at SnB instead of working on my own project.

There may  possibly have been some pouty looks when I arrived home, swathed in woolly goodness, so I cast on a hat for the husbeast that will fit over his big mop of hair. It took about 2 hours, and has reminded me why big needles are so fan-fecking-tabulous. Instant gratification for me and big smiles from HusBeast.

husbeast-hat

The top actually sticks up slightly in a vaguely pointy and cute way. I think it’s cute anyway. HusBeast approves because it’s still a manly hat, in a manly charcoal colour, which matches his scarf in a manly way….and keeps his poor widdle ears warm.

……I may get tickled to death for that comment. Totally worth it :)

Time is relative…as is Christmas

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

I honestly didn’t mean it to be so long since my last post. It’s the thing about being out of the nine-to-five loop. Days drag on, but weeks fly by.

Since my last update, I’ve been involved in running a gaming convention (as has HusBeast), raised a chunk of money for charity and made some wonderful donations to wonderful groups. Sometimes it really is the best job in the world, being a charity officer, even if all the money I see never makes it to my bank account.

Me at Gaelcon, complete with facepaint

Me at Gaelcon, complete with facepaint

Just a couple of days later, we were on a plane to Georgia, where we were involved in running another games convention, though this one was for a thousand people. A little overwhelming to say the least, but awesomely good fun. Seeing as we were in that neck of the woods, we did…..sod all. Mostly we recovered, got to hang out with friends, and relaxed. We stopped by the Georgia Aquarium, which was incredible. Even got to play with itty bitty sharks!

Went to a plantation, which was beautiful and immensely disturbing all at once.

This beautiful bed and all the bedding (including the fabulous canpoy) were all handmade...by slaves.

Met up with some fantastic LSG’ers

Dontcha love the tshirt?

and was introduced to the wonderfully delicious world of Firefly iced tea vodka. My only sob story is that there was none of it to be found in the airport on the way home. (As an aside, never, ever, ever travel through ATL airport if you’re PMS’ing, having a bad day, have more bags than limbs, or are generally not good with queuing. The place is in-fricking-saaaane!)

In terms of actual knitting content, I came back from the States with very little yarn, which was surprising. By very little, of course, I mean it weighed less than a small child. Got me some Sugar n cream, as it comes in cool colours and can’t be bought in Ireland. Picked up a couple of skeins of Red Heart sock yarn and entirely shocked myself in the process (it’s 75% wool, 25% nylon and as much as I hate to say it, feels pretty damn squishy!). Was brought a baggie by MorningSprite which contained four skeins of amazingly fabulous silky merino and one merino lace from Mmmmmmalabrigo. Even got my mitts on a skein of Lotus Yarns gorgeous purple yarn! Bonus!

I’ve been working through my stash slowly but surely. Very practical yet unfulfilling washcloths made from a bag of cotton that I purchased in February.

washbags

They’re bags, essentially. Soap goes in bag, hangs in shower. No killing self by slipping on soap that inevitably ends up in the shower tray. Also less mess to clean up, which is a cheeky bonus.

I’ve managed, in epic style, to completely avoid Holiday knitting. I hate holiday knitting.

It’s stressful, it’s not pleasurable, and makes even the sanest knitter contemplate mummifying themselves in acrylic so they can hide under the stairs until Spring. Personally I prefer the “unplanned knitted gifts” routine. I knit for people and give them the knitted item when it’s done. Could be any time of the year. It generally goes down well as the recipient isn’t expecting it, plus there’s the added joy of knowing that it’s not going to be buried under a mound of wrapping paper and plastic reindeer that poop chocolate raisins.

Holiday yarny gifts, on the other hand, are awesome. Like my fabulous gift from the Secret Satan swap on Ravelry. Still don’t know who my gifter was, but they did a truly epic job in stalking me online.

I’m sure I’ll find out soon enough who you are, but in the meantime - THANK YOUUUUU!!!!!

Co-Inky-Dink!

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

A couple of weeks ago, I started work on the Retro Redux Shrug, from Lace Style (Ravelry link). I had originally started it months and months ago, but could only find one skein of the three Cascade 220’s I had bought in NYC. Cue much swearing and frogging. Well seeing as I’ve been cleaning for Ireland of late, I found the other two skeins.

Sure, the brioche stitch is a little repetitive. I loved it. Just enough variation to keep my fingers interested, not so much variation that I couldn’t knit it while watching movies or at SnB. The Wednesday before last, I brought it along to said SnB, with the intention of getting it finished that day so that I could move along and get cracking on the Two Tone Shrug from Fitted Knits. I got a prezzie of the yarn for this pattern (some variagated Cascade quatro, and some teal 220)  from the lovely MorningSprite, and had yet to make the thing. I had attempted it once previously after far too much wine, and frogged it the next morning.

When I arrive at SnB, I notice that KneeHigh has a copy of Fitted Knits with her. Not only that, but she was working on the start of her two tone shrug. In not entirely dissimilar tones to my yarn.

I got done with the redux shrug, as planned.

retroreduxshrug2

Could use a rinse with some hair conditioner (220 heathers seems to be much rougher than regular 220, whatever crazy things they do to it), but it’s done and dusted, and rather snazzy. On with the two tone.

We both arrived in last Wednesday as usual. We hadn’t talked about our projects since the week before but through some strange psychic link, had reached exactly the same point in the pattern. Not only that, but at some stage the night before we had both independently read the pattern, scoffed at the notion of seaming, and decided to magic loop the sleeves. It was a total kodak moment.

Ok, ok. Perhaps it’s only interesting if you were there, but it was rather funny. I’ve never had anything like that happen before  -in relation to a knitting project at least.

I’ve broken the cycle now anyway. Two nights up late watching the final season of Battlestar Galactica means that an awful lot of ribbing was done. I was pretty disappointed by the last episode, to be honest. It rivalled Return of the King for the most it’s-over-no-actually-it’s-not endings. I also didn’t like most of the wrap ups. My advise for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet (and I’m sure there’s at least one of you) is to watch all the way through to the end of the second last episode, then make the rest up in the personal movie theatre of your mind. I wish I had..

The shrug though, I am not disappointed in. It’s squishy, and the two colours work perfectly with each other. I can see myself wearing this a lot over the next few weeks, as the weather turns colder.

The mini eco-system that is the back garden is still flourishing, and the neighbours’ adorable black cat comes to visit and play in it on a very regular basis.

…..so what exactly has changed in the two months I’ve left unblogged?

Lots.

I’ve been doing everything other than blogging, because I’ve been run off my feet on a regular basis. I might not have a proper job, but you’d never know it. I’ve even had to splash out on a proper filofax to keep track of things.

The end of June was mostly spent dealing with tax bits, which I’m still dealing with and am not going to bore you with. By the time my mother’s birthday rolled around in July, things were in full swing. She had her first break out of the rut in two years, and came to Dublin with my dad for a couple of days. As soon as that was over, it was into gaming high season for one of the many gaming groups I’m involved with.

All very glamourous, but rather exhausting.

From there, I moved rapidly on to working on a short movie…

digging

…then got my dig on. Indiana Jones, eat your heart out!

Myself and Husbeast are working on a show at the moment as well; the last couple of weeks have been mostly filled with propmaking, painting sets and sewing costumes. It’s awesomely good fun. I’ve missed being involved in theatre and film so much since my dad got sick, and I’m finally starting to make my way back in to it.

I haven’t entirely abandoned my yarny goodness, even though it has been entirely moved to the back burner for the last while. It’s on the way back with a vengence. Have to either fit more hours in the day, or learn to survive on far less sleep in order to cram everything in - that’s the tricky bit.

In an effort to get some mindless knitting going (as nothing complicated should be attempted when sleep depped or stressed) I started my Christmas present for my mother.

tablerunner

It’s the  Adobe table runner from Summer’s Interweave Knits. Amazingly simple, and will look fab when finished and blocked. My mother’s dining table is about two feet longer than I had realised though, so I need to put in some serious time on this yet. The yarn is some indigo dyed fingering weight cotton that I picked up from Avoca. I had been trying to come up with a way to use it, and had my lightbulb moment on flicking through IK. The slight downside is the milage.  Even after finishing this runner, I’ll have enough left for an entire set of placemats and coasters for her birthday next year…..and still have most of a kilo of the stuff left. It’s not making my stash knitdown any easier, I’ll tell ya!

Yup, the stash knitdown. Seeing as I have a yarn budget of precisely zero at the moment, I’ve been reassessing my stash. Some is going to be sold off, because I have a lot of pretty things that I bought in a moment of weakness and will most likely never get around to knitting. The rest is finally going to be worked through, a piece at a time.  I have the yarn to make a central park hoodie for almost three years, but haven’t even downloaded the pattern yet!

Am I the only one to have the bag of yarn for some jumper or cardigan or other lurking in the stash for years? With the pattern picked out, and all the right sized needles ready to go? I may not be crazy lady with cats, but I sure seem to be “crazy lady with RowanSpun”…
