Will you do the Fandango?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

A little bit of a geeky reference to a Queen song, just to get things kicked off.

The Ravelympics came and went, and though I didn’t finish my project, I did really well. Vivian was done up as far as the yoke, which considering just how many times I had to restart the cabled project of doom is pretty impressive.

What is less impressive is the fact that I’ve not picked her up again since. Real life has exploded over the last couple of weeks, and unfortunately it hasn’t all been in good ways by a long shot.

Bad times require mindless knitting, so a couple of balls of Sugar and Cream got turned from stash into FOs.

lime-washcloths

Much like handknitted socks, washcloths tend to suffer from a serious case of “why wouldn’t you just buy them”. As the owner of one very sensitive face, I’ve become addicted to the things. They take no time to work up, are fabulously soft yet still manage to exfoliate my skin so that I don’t end up with puberty-face.

mistletoe-cloths

These ones remind me less of Christmas and more of Italy. Perhaps it’s wishful thinking now that Spring is in the air.

In spectacular fashion, I stayed in all day yesterday, despite the fact that it was national drinking day Paddy’s day in Ireland. I was far too domesticated* Did a lot of handwashing (our washing machine is still out of order three weeks later. Bloody nightmare!) and finished a pair of socks that had been hanging around for far too long.

scaramouche

So not my colour, but they’re still fabulously comfy. I love Lorna’s laces sock yarn bigtime.

I also had a slight lightbulb moment yesterday. Not only did I darn a sock (my lovely tofutsies sock) that I’ve been ignoring for weeks and weeks, but in the great rummage for the end of the ball of yarn, I found a perfectly wound cake of Malabrigo silky merino. The cake that I convinced myself that I didn’t have back in February when I was working on my Clapotis, which resulted in wailing and the gnashing of teeth. Slightly embarassed (though very frugal-feeling, now that I don’t have to buy another skein) work has resumed on the Clap. Should be done over the weekend, and then it’s back to Vivian!

The down side to that particular see saw is that cash is tight for us right now, so I’m forcing myself to do a destash-for-cash. I have been feeling rather guilty about my huge box of sock yarn that’s just sitting in my room when we’re managing to just about scrape by on rent and bills. I’ve got some good stuff on the way out, including one of my precious, precious skeins of Wollmeise. If anyone’s interested, it’s up on my trade page on Ravelry.

I’ve also uploaded a whole load of new, shiny and fabulously squishy yarns on my etsy store, so check them out!

*Don’t worry, I still had a couple of drinks. Though that ended with a mad dive to rescue a laptop, a sticky mobile phone and a rather flustered HusBeast…

The one in which I’m sponsored by Kleenex..

Have managed to get myself well and truly lurgified. HusBeast has been unwell over the last couple of days and spiked a huge fever on Sunday night. I thought rather smugly, that I’d escaped. Woke up this morning feeling like I’d been punched repeatedly between the eyes as I slept. Still managed to crawl out of bed and over to the station in time to catch the train, but left town early and am now ensconced on the sofa, complete with hot drink and blanket, and several projects are surrounding me and begging for attention.

The accidently teeny hat is still sitting on the same bread plate that it was last week. It’s really pretty, but unless I’m planning on shrinking to the size of a five year old, it’s gonna need frogging.

accidently-teeny-hat

The yarn and pattern are both great though, and work really well together. I just had a slight fail on the needles is all.

The main reason that it hasn’t been blocked is because of this beautiful creature, which is currently nestled asserting dominance over my knitting basket.

blackberry-clap

It’s the infamous Clapotis, in Mmmmmmalabrigo silky merino, which is amazingly like the yarn I used for my first clap in all aspects bar the price. Even with the silly shipping rates, this stuff is still pretty damn affordable. (BTW, if you Dubs haven’t been into This Is Knit to fondle their Malabrigo yet, I suggest you do it quickly!) These skeins were a prezzie from the lovely Lesley (who came to visit…more below!) and unfortunately I’ve run out just as I get into the last section. Seems that getting this done on 3 skeins was just a tad on the over ambitious side.  Being the epic person that she is, Lesley messaged me as soon as she got home to say she’d secured another skein in the yarn shop that she works in (Fibre Space in D.C.)

Seeing as there was a visiting knitter in the house, Friday was mostly spent trawling through the many yarn shops in Dublin, which go from the awesome to the “3 skeins of baby acrylic on a shelf” variety.

I’ve been resisting buying yarn for months now, partly because I’ve got a lot and partly because I can’t justify buying even more yarn when I’ve got *coughovercoughthirtymilescough* of the stuff already. I got a gift voucher for my birthday in October and picked up some lambs pride to make a Sylvi out of. On Wednesday I technically broke my no-yarn-since-October kick when I had to pick up two more skeins of the same stuff that I’d ordered in October. Friday saw me fall off the wagon rather dramatically, as I found myself returning home with this

rowan-splurge

It’s Rowan pure wool aran in a fab charcoal colour. I’d been lusting after it for a while to make myself a Vivian and when I saw it on sale, I crumpled like a cheap suit. In an amazing turn of events, I even started a swatch at SnB this morning. I may die of seed stitch, but it should look awe-fricking-some.

The sock of the moment is still on the go, and even went to Kilkenny castle with us at the weekend.

well-travelled-sock

It’s not a colourway that I’d have chosen for myself as I’m the least pink person out there, but it came as part of the Lorna’s Laces sock club. I love their sock yarn, and I love knitted socks, so who am I to deny myself? They may be resigned to being boot socks though.

Being at a tourist spot, with a tourist, it was time for a cheesy photo op as well

say-cheese

Classy birds, us!

I’ve got yet another project on the go now as well. Gabriel’s wings is the pattern, and it’s using a fabulously coloured skein of Noro sock yarn that I got for my 29th but didn’t want to turn into socks. The two are working rather well together.

gabriels-wings

It’s early days yet, but I’m liking it so far. Should be pretty cool when it’s all blocked and stuff.

In other news, I’ve done an etsy store update - or the start of one at least. Sock is up, lace and DK will be going up tonight, unless I’m forced back to bed by my irate tonsils. As usual, all colourways are repeatable in all bases, so if you see something you might like feel free to drop me a line.

This is one of Lesley’s knits that she brought with her..it’s Ysolda’s Ishbel, and it’s knitted in my organic merino DK.

It’s always really nice to see my yarn knitted up into much-loved garments. It’s just the confidence booster a girl needs on a dull and sneezy Wednesday afternoon.

Time for more of that ginger, lemon and honey concoction, methinks.

…is worth two on the foot?

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Yesterday I escaped my woes in fantastic style, by heading to Stitch and bitch. Our regular city centre haunt was closed, as it is every bank holiday weekend, so instead I made my way to meet the gang at Stitch.

I didn’t manage to take any photos, as I was too busy squishing yarn, eating cake, gossiping and drinking my own volume in tea. Fantastic stuff.

My afternoon started with a stuffed monster (for the lovely Becky, who was in labour in London as I knitted. She has since popped out the cutest boy on the planet, Dylan. Go Becky!), but as I was so busy talking and failing to be able to count to six without considerable effort, I abandoned it and took up with my mountain creek footies. Still not massive amounts of progress due to the aforementioned tea, cake and gossip, but if I’ve learned anything over the last few years it’s that sometimes you don’t get any knitting done at a knitting circle.

image082

Footie one, done.

I like (and by like, I mean hate) how this photo betrays that it’s a bank holiday weekend where I’m not planning on leaving the house. Yoga pants and power cables are telling things in a picture I think. The plan for today is to get the second one done - not too unlikely as I’m already near turning the heel - and to get my dye stock made for the morning, so that I can have  productive day of dyeing and coding tomorrow. I’d also like to get the second one of my NDS socks done. First one is very comfy, despite this photo making me look like I have the world’s worst cankles.

image085

Yup, that’s a D&D character sheet. Second ed. (or first ed of AD&D for us purists). I am nerd, here me roar!!!

So yeah, overall I’m feeling remarkably good. I’m starting to look at the silver lining in the recent developments in my life, and it’s becoming bigger by the day. This is going to be a very good thing, I know it is.

Thanks so much to everyone who left supportive comments and emails and messages on Ravelry. I love you guys.

Sock it to me

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I’ve been knitting away over the last week, and managed to get my first Natural Dye Studio sock done and dusted on Sunday while at the InLaws. A little running around the house was involved, as just before heading out the door to drive to their house, I realised that ball two of the fabulousness had done a vanishing act. A rummage down the side of the bookcase and under the sofa and between the cushions proved fruitless, and time being of the essence I was left with no choice other than to bring another skein along with me.

mountaincreek

I bought this quite a while ago, and managed to make myself a pair of socks out of a skein and a teeny bit from a second skein.

A few weeks ago, the unthinkable happened. In sock terms at least. My lovely mountain creek socks, being the clever and devious footcoverings that they are, decided that a little wreckless behaviour was in order and carelessly threw themselves into a hot wash without any regard for my feelings or sanity.

It’s probably for the best that I didn’t notice the little blighters waving at me as they went on their sudsy rollercoaster ride. I think I may have been found kneeling on the floor, sobbing with frustration and trying to get my fingers under the edge of the washer door - potential flooded kitchen bedamned!

Now I’m left with a very snazzy pair of socks for a 6 year old (I have small feet at the best of times, and these things won’t even go over my instep now). Never one to entirely admit defeat - at least not without a little ranting and a lot of frogging - I was not going to be left without mountain creek socks. With that in mind, I wound up my remaining yarn and cast on a pair of footie socks.

As I’ve managed to once more “misplace” the usb cable for my phone, I can’t actually get the photos across to my laptop. I’ve tried swearing, threatening and cajoling it to work by some form of magic, but so far there’s no sign of cooperation on the part of my technology.

I’m still making do with the camera on my phone, since our phone was nicked on honeymoon last year. Those days are almost over though, as we’ve been window camera-shopping, and I think we’ve finally decided on a model/price range/place to get it. Another couple of weeks, and I’ll have some really nice piccies up on the storefront.

In fact, there will probably be a bandwidth-killing number of photos up as I play with my new toy. If I can manage to get it away from HusBeast, that is.

The one where I hang my head.

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

On Friday, it occured to me that I hadn’t blogged in a while. When I realised that it had in fact been a whole month, I felt rather embarassed. Not embarrassed enough to, y’know, remember my password or anything, but still.

On a day to day basis, my life has been rather mundane. Work seems to take up a large amount of my waking hours and thoughts. The last few weekends have been a bit nuts as well. This one is no exception, apart from the happy-making fact that it is gloriously sunny outside. Not hot, just a little warm with a hint of a breeze. Perfect yarn drying weather.

Yup, proper busy little bee, me.

Mmmmdk

Mmmmdk

This bit of lovelyness went up on my etsy store about 2 minutes ago. Organic merino in dk/worsted weight. My washing line is weighed down with more skeins, and they’ll be going up as soon as they’re dry.

Signs of summer are all around at the moment, it seems

blossom

Being the eternal optimists, we’re all hoping that this year we’ll get what’s termed a “proper” summer. Meaning that the temperature will get into double digits (celcius!) for more than a couple of days, and that we’ll get less rain than during the winter months. Seeing as our summer technically starts on Friday next week, I won’t be breaking out my short shorts. I may be brave and put away my winter coat though. Ooooh daring!

I’ve been doing sod all knitting since my last post. My Tangled Yoke is still untouched in it’s project bag, and the scarf and blankie that I started have both been frogged due to apathy. I’ve been reading a huge amount instead though. Mostly what I refer to as “trashy vampire novels”. Since my last post I’ve gone through the first four Blood Ties books (and stopped because I don’t have any more of them), the first of a Kelley Armstrong series (number two arrived on Friday), The Spooks Mistake (waiting for the next one in paperback now), the first two Sookie Stackhouse books (three is in the post, 4 is on my bedside table) and I’m currently wading through Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles.

Still with me?

I tend to go in cycles with both my knitting and reading. I don’t tend to both at any one time - I’ll either be knitting up a storm or going through books like a crazy woman. Maybe at some point I’ll hit a balance. Not right now though, methinks.

For the first time in a few weeks, I took up my knitting needles on Friday night, and for just long enough to get the toe done on a single sock. Yesterday I got some more work done at it at Stitch and Bitch, and by the time dinner rolled around I’d turned the heel.

bfl-sock

Ain’t it pretty? It’s some gorgeous BFL sock yarn from The Natural Dye Studio. In truth, it has been sitting in my stash for a couple of years now, and I would pet it on a regular basis. Seeing as I’ve become a lot less precious about my stash of late, I thought it high time that this became something that would show off it’s fabulousness instead of hiding it in a blanket box. It’s so much fun to knit.

It’s also the first time I’ve used one of the Knitpicks Harmony needles, or KnitPro as they’re now known in Europe. They won’t replace my Addis I think, but they’re rather nice. I’m hoping that they’ll also mean that I’ll get my sock in progress through airport security in the Autumn. I don’t really like reading on planes. Or should I say that I’m usually trying to watch as many of the “not out in Ireland yet” movies that I can in one sitting, so a nice sock would be a happy accompanient to that.

That’s a while off yet though, so no use overthinking it. Will see how long it takes me to get this pair done first.

Begosh and bego….*smash*

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

While I am endlessly proud of my country and her history, today is an important day for many reasons. One is that I have a beer beside me, my Tangled Yoke in the works and it’s not even the weekend. Second is that this is the biggest day in the year for my “For the love of KnitPicks, please stop calling it “St. Patty’s Day” ” campaign.

It’s going better this year than last. I’ll clock that up as a minor success. Then again, I’ve been avoiding the Oirish stuff like the plague today.

Being the vaguely productive type, I’ve got some more goodies up on the shop now. Laceweight in baby alpaca. I may cry when I have to hand it over to customers. It’s one of the squishiest, most edible things I’ve ever made. I might even have to keep a skein for myself to make some long underwear out of or something.

My STR socks have not only been finished, but I’m wearing them! Today is just not a day for shoes. I had them on for an hour this morning as we went to the bottle bank and that’s enough of that, thanks much.

image054

I love them to death. The colours are perfect for me, they’re really comfy, and for a change they’re for me and not HusBeast or someone else. Bwah ha ha haaaa.

Tangled Yoke is coming along. It takes aaaages to knit a single row, as it’s all in one piece, but there’s enough done now so that I feel I have more to show than a rather large cast on.

image057

I’m not even half way through the first ball of Felted Tweed yet, so I am slightly optimistic that I’ll get through it without having to turn up at the door of This Is Knit in tears five minutes before they close on some Saturday evening, begging them for one more skein. Of any colour at all.

Anyway, it being the day that’s in it, I’m going to stop typing, put my laptop away, and go beat the bejaaaaaaysus out of Darth Vader with a lightsabre. Did I mention how much Lego Star Wars on the Wii rocks? Cos it really does.

Lá fhéile Pádraig shona do gach éinne. Sláinte!

Overkill, much?

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

I’ve officially hit max capacity on projects. I’m at 4 WIPs now, which is the most I think I’ve had on the go since I first learned to knit. While I realise that some people have more WIPs than finished projects to their names, I am normally very strict at keeping my project basket as free as possible.

It’s possibly a form of OCD or something. Personally I think it’s a reflection of the fact that I get distracted by teh shiny quite easily (some would say that I actively launch myself in that direction on a regular basis) and if I didn’t make myself either finish or frog projects, then I’d be living in a house of WIPs and not much else.

Honestly, one of them needs to be frogged. I started some megaboots socks a full eight weeks ago on the train home, and have progressed no further than the toe. It’s progress, and in the right direction, but there’s not a hope in hell of me getting them done any time soon, and I swear they really are taunting me from the WIP basket.

The handbag project is, as usual, socks. My STR socks are still moving along, but they really only get attention on the train to and from work. Unless I fall asleep. I’ve about an inch to go before I get to rib away to my hearts content.

heathered-retro

This cheeky little minx is the Retro Redux shrug from Lace Style. It’s mostly true to the pattern, though I couldn’t resist a little fidgeting with it, as is my way. I’m up to the end of the first “arm” and the next needle size up. Which I don’t have.

Argh.

I’m starting to think that this thing does not want to be knitted. By me, at least. I was in my LYS on Saturday and picked up some needles for another project, and forgot the 6mm needles that I needed for this. I did a mad five-minutes-before-closing dash there again this week and picked up my sixes. Knitting away last night, smug as a….smug thing, I got to the next line of the pattern that advised me to move on to my largest needles. You know, the 6.5mm ones that I don’t actually possess?

Did I get stressed? No. Did I wonder how I got to this point in my life without a set of 6.5mm needles? Nuh uh.  Did I hurl my project across the room, questioning the parentage of everyone in the room in the process? Nope!

I did what any knitter in the same situation would do.

I cast on another project.

tangled-yoke-start

Two hours later I had what essentially amounts to a yarn pretzel.

The second smallest size of Eunny Jang’s Tangled Yoke cardigan requires a 269 stitch cast on. While this will be awesome for the lack of sewing at the end, I nearly went blind and insane in the process. It seems that I lose my ability to count when tired and/or stressed. First attempt I had 267 stitches. That had to go. Second attempt I was clever. I got HusBeast to hold both ends of the circ while I, looking like someone who should clearly be on meds, went along the cable and counted each stitch. Twice.

I’m going to completely ignore the fact that it took me an average time of 35 minutes to a row by the time I got passed the epic casting on and reached the stage in the photo above.

Now that there’s some actual fabric (all one inch of it) it’s a much easier beast to tame. I’m even feeling brave enough to take it to SnB this evening. In a pub.

Perhaps a lifeline might be a good idea….

Flying distractions

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

I am a total sucker for The Shiny ™.

For example, while shopping on Saturday I came across these beauties:

Pretty, ain’t they?

Pretty onions, rosé onions, to be precise.  Now I do like onions, and eat them a couple of times a week at least. Usually in a curry or pasta dish where they’re not the main event. Not enough to really justify buying a 2kg string of them.

Yet there they are…hanging off the handle of a press in my kitchen. (You can even see a bag of Java Republic coffee on the bread bin behind them).  It’s not like I can even do something like make a pot of French onion soup to use them all at once. HusBeast hates onions, unless they’re hidden well in something like a stew or bolognaise. Presenting him with a bowl of onion soup and telling him that it’s dinner could take more convincing than even I am capable of.

Still, they are very pretty.

I must confess, the string of temptation is not the only shiny thing that has caught my attention this week.

Socks.

Socks that are distinctly not STR socks.

Yesterday evening I found myself in a strange situation. I had finished my peach tree socks on the way to work, and had an empty project bag (and needles) to bring home. In an amazing coincidence, just before I left work I reached in to my desk drawer to grab something, and found a ball of Lana Grossa MegaBoots sock yarn.

I’m sure some of you are knitters of iron constitution. I’m sure that many, if not all of you, would have been able to sit through a 40 minute train journey knowing that in your bag was a set of sock needles and a new ball of yarn, and yet have been able to resist the siren call.

I am not that knitter.

I am weak and fickle, it seems. Weak and fickle, and making good progress on sock one of the new pair.

I’ll be good…someday.

Domestic Bliss?

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I was positively grown up this weekend. I did a few loads of laundry, ran the dishwasher a couple of times, cleaned up the kitchen and living room, and did some dyeing. Very productive. I even did a (very) vague meal plan for the week and went to the supermarket to stock up on meat and veggies. My little bubble of domestic bliss could possibly have been heard popping from several aisles over, as I ran into this display.

It may only be January, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t stock up on Easter eggs already. Come on people, get with the programme! It’s been 3 weeks since the last holiday chocolate vanished off the shelves!

Now while I may not celebrate easter, love easter eggs as much as the next person. Egg shaped chocolate just tastes better, dammit. Easter isn’t until the middle of April though. I thought at the very least we’d get all the obligatory shamrock shaped/coloured/flavoured crap out of the way before the eggs made their presence known. Nope! Not this year!

..and no, I didn’t buy one. Though I was tempted. Outraged, but tempted.

As my Saturday went a little mad on the “doing stuff” side, I didn’t get the planned hours to sit down and finish my peach tree socks. I did get quite a bit more done though, mostly facilitated by a roast chicken dinner and half a bottle of wine. I’ve about an inch left to go before I start the ribbing, which means it’s just under the 3 inch mark before I can cast off. Rocking. Given that my game tonight has been cancelled and that dinner is some very nice and cheaty fresh pasta (simmer for 3 minutes, add salt, pepper, olive oil, and whack in a bowl) I might even get it finished.

Unless I get distracted by something else that’s squishy, shiny and demanding my attention. Like, oh I don’t know….these babies?

These are my much neglected STR socks. They’ve been sitting in the knitting basket beside the sofa since….I cast off the first one. They’re also what has made me decide to sod holiday/birthday/anniversary knitting, and go with “random knitted gift-ology” instead. I got the second one started on the bus this morning, and made embarassingly little progress before falling asleep and almost missing my stop.

The poor socks have been hanging about so long, they almost feel like a new project. Which brings me to my very efficient task list.

I’m hoping, by the end of February (…it’s a short month….and it’s practically here already…) that I’ll have both pairs of socks done, my one row scarf done, and will have made good headway on my scary project.

Scary project, you say?

Yup.

I’m finally going to teach myself entrelac.

Ok, ok, stop laughing. I know it’s not as difficult as it looks. It’s the setup thing at the beginning that is the intimidating part, which is why I’m giving myself a whole month to get started.

Reading the directions counts as getting started, right?

The daily grind

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

We’ve been out of coffee at work for nearly a week. Our order tracking number says that it’s in the city in a courier van.  How it took 2 weeks from ordering for someone to get it as far as a fecking courier van is beyond me. We’re paying through the nose for postage for the precious, and while I realise that it’s coming from a warehouse in some little village in the middle of mainland Europe SOMEONEPLEASEGIVEMEMYCOFFEEALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, yes, I realise that I could walk to any number of fine establishments in the neighbourhood and pick up a cup of amazingly expensive coffee. (Seriously, U.S. readers? Next time you’re in Starbucks looking at the prices on the menu, know that we here across the pond are paying the same prices…in bloody Euro) Thing is, it’s cold outside, and it’s also that time of the month.

You all know that time. It’s a week before your (monthly) payday, something came up during the last fortnight (phonebill and car stuff, in my case) and now when you open your wallet, moths (eep!) fly out. You’re down to raiding the penny jar that you were gonna give to some kids last month because it’s taking up room on a shelf and is one more thing to dust. Your subconsious mind tells you that you can last the next 2 days no problem….but that your favourite yarn store is probably having a 70%-off-everything-you-like-for-24-hours-only-sale just because the universe has a fabulous sense of humour.

This is possibly all a smidge on the melodramatic side (you don’t know maaan! You weren’t there!!!) especially considering some of the things going on in the world at the moment. There’s a new president in the U.S. (I love you guys so fricking much for voting him in) who, only hours after his inauguration requests a halt to trials at GitMo, pending an investigation. It’s the 50th birthday of Dáil Eireann, and unemployment in the U.K. heads for the 2 million mark (don’t even want to think what it is in Ireland).

If I’m honest with myself, the coffee is really just acting as the proverbial last straw. I’ve hit my January funk in epic fashion, and it has got enough mittens and cocoa to see it through til February. While the clearout is still ongoing, and feels fecking great, it’s highlighting some other areas of my life that are, frankly, stagnant and going nowhere, but that I can’t purge; at least not yet.

I still haven’t finished my one row scarf. I have one glorious STR sock that fits me like..er…a sock, and have no time to make its mate. I have made a start on some things though. I’ve got an actual queue going on on Ravelry. I have the majority of my stash yarns assigned to particular projects or earmarked for gifting. I have the heel on the second peach tree sock turned:

Peach tree sock

Not my colours in the slightest, but perfect for my mother. It reminds me of a peach tree under an early morning sky in the Italian summer. This yarn is lovely. It’s Lana Grossa, and it’s mostly cotton with a little lambswool thrown in. The texture is beautifully soft and silky, and makes me wonder why I’ve never knitted anything in a cotton/wool blend before. I’m hoping to get it finished and in the post on Saturday, so it can be an early-in-the-week surprise.

I really want to restart my 2 tone shrug after that, or even get a blanket underway (it is damn cold here at night at the moment) but the teacher voice in the back of my head is tut tutting and reminding me about that scarf and sock. I love how I can make myself feel chastised, even when I’m actually getting stuff done.
